The WORLD’S BIGGEST ICICLE!!!

NOTE: just a clarification to those who have posted links to this site – these photos were taken in western MICHIGAN, U.S.A., not Canada. (not that there’s anything wrong with Canada, eh?) and in the next few weeks, everything will be starting to warm up. so we really don’t have “two more months to go.” – updated 7 March 2007, 9:12 p.m. E.S.T.

——-

The sun shone for a brief moment, earlier. Today is filled with snow, blowing snow and a terrible never-ending wind. You can see a bit of the drifting, towards the bottom of the photo. (That’s my neighbors’ garage there.) This is my favorite photo I shot so far today.

while it may not make the guiness book, it’s still the biggest icicle I’ve ever seen, therefore it qualifies as THE BIGGEST ICICLE IN THE WHOLE WORLD! hehe :D

now, some other huge icicle photos!
notice the tip, it’s below the siding of the house, mid-concrete!

  1. my goodness…those things could either put an eye out or make a heck of a lot of margaritas. :D
(personally, I’m glad to just be looking at it rather than being in it. Brrrrrr! LOL Though, you’ve a good excuse to just stay inside and blog.)

  2. hehe indeed! and, believe it or not, it looks worse outside today than it did yesterday…just woke up to 3″ of snow and more coming down and it’s a balmy 9 degrees F ;)

mmm margaritas! alas, I cannot stay in; today is worky worky worky! :( *sigh*

  3. they call them thar things ‘widow-makers’

  4. Oh wow! Those are seriously nice scenes. I do on occaision get icicles on my house like that – but nothing like that.

    Nice!

  5. thanks! :D and they’re all starting to melt now but not that much…it’s still only 19 degrees today :| ah well!

  6. this is the best post in the entire universe. digg it! oot!

  7. When those things start to drip water – break them off in a very safe manner – you don’t want some kids to come playing around the house and get impaled.

    Awesome but deadly.

blog owner responds: actually, we kept the kids away from the sides of the house. there was no way to get up that high – we don’t have a ladder that big and we didn’t bother the landlord. they all crashed down by themselves and no one got hurt. it was a sight to see though! :D unfortunately, they’re starting to come back now! ah well, that’s Michigan for you! :P thanks for the comment! :D

  8. We dont have those here in San Francisco. Our temperature today is around 60 f.

blog owner responds: sounds lovely! want to switch living quarters for the rest of the winter?! :P thanks for the comment! :D

  9. That is awesome! Imagine someone walking under it and it falls. :P
    -Thelaw13

blog owner responds: the icicles were absolutely amazing! and according to a news report I heard over the local radio, they can weigh anywhere from 300 to 500+ pounds when they’re that big! so, in a cartoon it would be hilarious but in reality it would squash anyone! I wouldn’t want to be the victim of an icicle! although, whoever would blog about it would probably be at #1, too! lol :P thanks for the comment! :)

  10. Al Gore would just turn up the heat and open a couple of windows to melt that sucker. Carbon footprint my ass.

blog owner responds: hahahahahahahahaha! and, I must either be having a blonde moment or I didn’t read that entire story on Gore’s energy usage but I don’t understand the ‘carbon footprint’ comment. or I’m just really tired. a lil help here? lol :D

  11. wow, this is so interesting. incredible value. the world needed to know this :/ I don’t know what the hell I’m doing here, It’ll be the last time, you can count on that.

  12. oh good! I’m glad to hear it…don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

  13. Just great!
    Nice pictures.
Here we had one day, one night of snow!
All is in flowers: spring, see!
However, we can still have some frost…
What a wonderful name, you have got yourself!

blog owner responds: thanks so much! ohh I wish it were spring. but today, March is definitely coming in like a lion! freezing rain, thunderstorms! all sorts of weathery goodness! the only thing left for it to do is all melt away! and thanks, perhaps one day I’ll divulge the complete meaning behind the name of my blog ;) :D

  14. If I was still a kid I’d be trying to break that sucker off and wield it as a sword.

blog owner responds: well, I’m not a kid anymore either…but I did attempt to knock/pull down one of the “smaller” ones, closer to the ground. it nearly knocked me out. so I ran away! :P

  15. wow!! they are some seriously good icicles you have there!!!

blog owner responds: oy! thanks! I made them myself! err wait, no, I didn’t! :P

  16. that is really one inCREDible icicle! wow! thanks for sharing =] and so sorry about the weather =\

blog owner responds: lol you’re welcome! thanks for taking an interest in it! I thought it was pretty nifty :D and thanks, hopefully it’ll all be sunny soon!!!

  17. Its no wonder i love California.

blog owner responds: I don’t blame you! (actually, I love it too…just don’t get there too often) :)

  18. Wow I have seen many like that when we travel through the mountains but never like that on a house.Beautiful but a little scary!

blog owner responds: indeed a bit scary! :P and I’ve seen huge icicles on the sides of mountains, but never hanging free like this, either! lol thanks for the comment! :)

  19. With all of those icicles you shouldn’t be able to feel the wind either.
    ;)

blog owner responds: I don’t think you’ve ever been to west Michigan! lol there’s no escaping the wind! :P

  20. Oh wow, snow and ice. Over here it’s 12°C outside, the sun is shining and it’s raining..

blog owner responds: ah not bad! I need some sun! send it this way! :D

  21. Great pics! I’ve lived in MN my whole life, and I’ve never seen an icicle like that.

blog owner responds: not a single one?! :)

  22. Wow… I’m in Michigan too… you must be north of me. I’m down near
    Detroit. and it’s raining here.

blog owner responds: actually, opposite side of the state! :) it’s raining/freezing rain here, too! :(

  23. [...] 1st, 2007 by The Moderate I was looking at the popular posts today. and I went and looked the pics. Them some big ol’ ice formations. and that sure is a GREEN [...]

  24. hola. I miss icicles. Don’t let children stand under them!!!

blog owner responds: oh we don’t!! :D

  25. I forgot to mention that I am in MI too. What county are you in? I’m in Livingston.

blog owner responds: I am quite a ways to the west of you, fellow transplant! (I’m not originally from MI, either) let’s just leave it as a generality – near GR. :)

  26. I pity the fool that don’t clean his gutters before winter.

  27. haahahahahahahaha! :D

actually, if you look closely, you can see that there are no gutters! (landlord’s fault!) :P

  28. Is it still there today?

  29. Wow – here in Melbourne, Australia at the moment we have had 30+ (Celcius) (somewhere around you 90 F I think) for the last few weeks. It’s been hot, dry and sweaty.
Our water storage for Melbourne is around 32% capacity. We need some rain, yet just on your roof alone you’ve got enough to fill Melbourne’s water supply back to full capacity!

I’ve never experienced anything like what’s depicted in those photos. Thanks for sharing!

    Mark

  30. Ahhh, the joys of winter in the Midwest…

  31. those things are huge

  32. hahaha! yes, they’re huge. no, they’ve melted/crashed off the house. and o what I wouldn’t do to have weather like austrailia’s right now! :D
